October 31st, 2008 by Root

Argghh!! Samhain! Samhein! What ever it is, Samhain or Samhein… I’m too late!! Arrgghhh!! Happy Halloween everybody! Today is October 30, tomorrow is halloween and Samhain or Samhein is “The Man” of Halloween!

Who is Samhain/Samhein?

Samhain (Scots Gaelic: Samhuinn) literally means “summer’s end.”.. Of course, the end of Spring is Autumn… and since we are here in Canada, we experience first hand that after spring is autum and now winter is coming.. It’s samhain’s Halloween!

In the country year, Samhain marked the first day of winter, when the herders led the cattle and sheep down from their summer hillside pastures to the shelter of stable and byre. The hay that would feed them during the winter must be stored in sturdy thatched ricks, tied down securely against storms.

Supernatural Halloween Samhein Special

Tonight’s episode of Supernatural is the one responsible for introducing me to Samhain or to the word Samhein. Apparently, he si the demon (samhein) that is synomymous to Halloween. Sam was able to send him back to hell, but i know Samhein is still there.

Other Information About Samhein/Samhain

I read it that Samhain is an Irish word that has somthing to do with harvsting.. Samhain (in English pronounced /ˈsaʊn/, /ˈsaʊɪn/ or /ˈsawɪn/,[1] from Irish samhain /ˈsˠaunʲ/, Scottish samhuinn /ˈsavɯɲ/, Old Irish samain /savanʲ/) (old English, Samhein) is a festival on the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture, with aspects of a Festival of the Dead. It is popularly regarded as ‘The Celtic New Year’.

Samhain/Samhein derives from the name of a month in the ancient Celtic calendar, in particular the first three nights of this month, with the festival marking the end of the summer season and the end of the harvest. The Gaelic festival became associated with the Catholic All Souls’ Day, and appears to have influenced the secular customs now connected with Halloween. Samhain is also the name of a festival in various currents of Neopaganism inspired by Gaelic tradition.

Whatever Samhein or Samhain is, that is one cool word in today’s season.. season of halloween..So to all, Happy Samhein slash Happy Samhein day!!
